Chalk Paint Table and Chalk Paint Observations

My second project using chalk paint involved a roadside freebie table (shown below) from the master bathroom.

This table was a perfect candidate for chalk paint as I did not want to spend a lot of time removing all the old paint – at least four coats - and sanding. Although not required, you can tell from the picture I did give the piece a light sanding to smooth out the surface a bit. I also scraped off much of the paint from the top as it was chipping. I used Annie Sloan’s Paris Grey (the same color I used on my mirror) with a top coat of Minwax for light colored wood.

One coat easily covered the old paint and the wax deepened the color - giving the table a beautiful, hand rubbed finish. If you look carefully at the picture above you can see the difference in color between the left side of the table which was waxed and the right side which was not.

This is certainly a big improvement from the formerly high gloss black paint this table used to wear.

Chalk Paint Observations
Now that I have completed two projects using chalk paint I have to say I am definitely a fan. It is easy to apply and most, if not all, the brush strokes disappear once the paint has dried. I know many people find the cost to be high. My take is that because there is no need to sand or prime you save not only in supply costs but time as well - time being the biggest bonus in my mind.

This paint covers well in just one coat, however, I did notice the mirror and table turned out to be slightly different colors. I am guessing this is due to the color paint I was covering. I am thinking two coats might be needed to achieve a more consistent color.

If you have any questions about using chalk paint I highly recommend this post written by Shauna at Perfectly Imperfect Blog. Shauna is a pro at painting and shares a great video and advice on her experiences using chalk paint.

Oh! For those of you who are curious, yesterday, I finally told my husband I painted the mirror in the kitchen. The verdict – he loved it but he liked the mirror the other way as well.

So, have you tried chalk paint yet? If so I would love to know your opinion!

Your little side table turned out great. I love the color.

With all the buzz about chalk paint and seeing the results, I'm almost ready to order.

I have it and I'm ready to go Stacy! I hoping to actually get started on either the little dresser or the headboard today. I'm glad you mentioned the brush strokes disappearing because I did wonder about that. Your table turned out wonderfully and I am going to just do a quick sanding over the dresser, too. My hubby put some wood in place of the missing drawers, so I do want to sand those a little anyway.

Your table turned out beautifully with its new coat of chalk paint. I hadn't heard of this type of paint and enjoyed reading your review of it.

Stacy... I love how the table turned out! Glad to read about your take on the chalk paint. Mine arrived a couple of days ago, but I haven't had time to try it yet. Paris Grey was one of the colors I got, so I'm glad to see how pretty it looks on your table :)

Your table and mirror look beautiful !! Love the colors you chose, as well. I have two cans of chalk paint just waiting to be used ... I'm still figuring out which piece I'm going to attack first. LOL

Oopss...I wrote a response that was meant for another blog...(Note to self: don't try to read two blogs at once. LOL!)
OK..now...I love the little table! I've never used chalk paint but I'm starting to get a "hankerin'" for trying it! Beautiful new look for such a cute table! My mom has one exactly like it...but she's never let me paint it :-( Maybe some day....

My chalk paint projects have turned out well, also. had a little trouble with using the dark wax but, I do like it. I have had to use two coats, however.

Love your "freebie". It is lovely.

Your table turned out great! So, I've been dying to know how is "chalk" paint different from just using flat paint and then waxing over it?? That's what I've always done.

p.s. so fun that M.P. was on your shoot! thank you for your kind words!

Glad to know that I am not the only one who picks things up from the curb. Your table looked like someone else DIY gone bad. I really could tell the difference that using the wax made. I love the hand rubbed look. Miss Mustard Seed also does tons of projects with chalk paint and is a good resource, too! Thanks for sharing and your table looks darling!

Your transformations are great! I've been hopping around trying to get the impressions form other bloggers who have been using this paint. I am really enjoying it and just finished a post in it this week. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I love the way your pieces came out. I have not tried it yet but I am considering using the Old White on my hutch. Just to save me from sanding and priming. I am hoping one quart would be enough to finish the hutch!

I think the great thing about chalk paint (even though I haven't tried it yet) is even though it is pricey, most people are painting an ugly or worn piece of furniture to bring it back to life. This paint seems to save time, and has a great finish to it. Love how your two pieces turned out. How long did was it after you painted the mirror before you asked your how he liked it? It has been awhile right?

I haven't tried Chalk Paint- but would love too. I've searched for it's locations to buy and couldn't locate in my area :(

I have not tried the chalk paint yet, but just wondering why you do not have to sand and prime with this paint? With an old piece of furniture I would think that sanding and priming would make it come out better. I am going to paint a pine cabinet with lots of knots in the wood. Dont I need to prime that first to cover them up?

Thanks for your wonderful article! I am just getting started and don't have a shop near me that gives lessons so I'm gathering as much info as I can.
Thanks!
